United States in need for teachers

According to the National Education Association (NEA), the pandemic caused an increase in the number of instructors quitting their jobs or even retiring early.

Classroom teachers and other school employees, who are already overworked, have recently been subjected to acute staff shortages that have affected school systems around the country.

According to Becky Pringle, NEA President, these shortages are not new, but the epidemic has made the situation worse and students are now suffering as a result.

"It is preventing educators from giving their students the one-on-one attention they need. It is forcing them to give up their class planning and lunch time to fill in for colleagues who are out due to COVID," Pringle explains. "And, it is preventing students from getting the mental health support needed."

“This is a five-alarm crisis," she continued. "If we’re serious about getting every child the support they need to thrive, our elected leaders across the nation need to address this crisis now."

The step that will assist remedy the crisis is hiring more instructors, according to respondents when asked about alternative solutions. They also mentioned the need for higher salaries, greater mental support for kids, and less paperwork.

Sobia Sheikh, a high school math teacher in Everett, Washington explains "Pay is a big factor, but we also need multiple models of support for educators…including time to plan, collaborate with colleagues, and build relationships with our students."

Salary for jobs in teaching

In May 2021, the annual wage for education, training, and library occupations was $57,220 (which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760).

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona explained in an article from the Newport Daily News that “There’s more money in education than ever before," he said. "Let’s use this disruption to raise the bar… Every state leader has American Rescue Plan (Act) dollars right now to create or expand career and college pathways and take steps to transform education in their communities. The president’s budget also includes over $200 million for career-connected learning.” he added.
